A Halloween-inspired graphic novel teaches kids about warts and removes the stigma associated with them. This entertaining and informative story shows children the importance of understanding their own skin and how to take care of it.
After practicing dermatology for over a decade in New York City, I was diagnosed with stage IV cancer and while on medical leave, I decided to finally write the children’s books about skin I had always dreamed of writing. I created a graphic novel series SKINVENTUREZ that promotes skin health via storytelling.
While the first novel The Sunscreaming Summer emphasizes sun protection, this Fall-themed, Halloween-inspired sequel Wart-o-Ween educates kids about warts and other common viral growths and aims to reduce the stigma associated with them.
Normalize warts by teaching kids that warts are common and a normal part of growing up
Encourage open communication by creating a safe space for kids to talk about their concerns and feelings about their warts
Provide reassurance by letting kids know warts are typically harmless
Offer treatment options and involve children in the decision-making process
Dr. Tamara Lazic Strugar was born and raised in Serbia, and moved from her war-torn homeland to the US at the age of 18. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from UCLA where she graduated with highest honors and various awards, including the Tom Brokaw Award for Life Achievements.
Dr. Lazic obtained two degrees from Yale University, completing both her medical school training and internship there. She went on to complete dermatology residency at Boston University’s Roger Williams Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident and received multiple awards for patient care and academic excellence. In 2012, she accepted an academic position at Mount Sinai’s St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals in New York City.
She is an Associate Clinical Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and has published numerous dermatologic articles and book chapters.
As a full-time dermatologist and mom of two young children, finding time to commit to the children’s books she’s always dreamed of writing was difficult. After being diagnosed with stage IV cancer in the spring of 2022, she took a break from clinical practice to undergo treatment and dedicated her spare time to writing the SKINVENTUREZ graphic novel series, using storytelling to teach kids about skin health.
With the huge focus on wellness, health, beauty, and overall general health, there’s no better time to learn best practices than to start with youth. In Dr. Tamara Lazic Strugar’s Skinventurez graphic novel series for young readers, she wraps up educational nuggets of skin care health with imaginative and fun storytelling.
The first playful tale follows a family and friends who vacation together in the summer and are in for a spooky adventure… and a painful lesson about ignoring necessary sunburn prevention routines.
I was so impressed with the way that this fun story disguises learning about proper skin care protection and attention. Children will love the graphic novel illustrations and the scary and silly adventures, while families and educators of young children will love the informative message that it relays that provides a foundation for future healthy skin care. A must-read perfect for summer reading and back to school.
This book is absolutely adorable! I love the concept first and foremost-to educate kids and parents on skin health.
The writing is witty, the plot engaging and funny, the drawings are spectacular! I highly recommend this book.
It’s the perfect book to give as a gift, and so beautiful to keep in your home. Can’t wait for the next Skinventure!
“Sunscreaming Summer” is a hilarious, entertaining, relatable, and most importantly educational comic book that effortlessly combines fun storytelling with valuable lessons on skin care and protection. “Sunscreaming Summer” is a must-have for any child’s library, and also great addition to school summer reading lists.
What sets this book apart is its ability to educate without overwhelming young readers. Readers are focused on the storyline while subconsciously learning along the way. The information is presented in a clear, concise, and age-appropriate manner, making it easy for kids to grasp and remember. The characters themselves are relatable and diverse, ensuring that every child can find someone they connect with and aspire to be like.
The book empowers children to take charge of their own health and well-being while instilling lifelong habits that will benefit them in the long run.
This engaging book is a fantastic resource to learn more about how to take care of your skin and protect against the sun from an early age.
What a thoughtful children’s book that was funny and so educational. Habits begin at a young age and after we finished this book our little guy has since brought up sunscreen anytime it’s appropriate and necessary for him to wear it.
We live in Florida so that is very important. The characters themselves were so adorable sharing their lives and it felt like a children’s book that has long been forgotten!
So grateful to this talented author physician for helping us make changes in skin health for our children! Loved reading at night with our little guy and coming back to discuss where we left off.
Highly recommend and make sure you have a good tube of sunscreen once you start.
“The Sunscreaming Summer” is a delightful graphic novel written by dermatologist Dr. Tamara Lazic with a perfect blend of engaging storytelling, and a passion for promoting sun safety. This book is important for families looking to learn about the significance of proper skincare.
Dr. Lazic weaves her magic storytelling mainly through the characters Mia, Luka, Jude, and Anya. While the children are on summer vacation, having fun playing pranks on one another, they encounter various adventures and challenges along the way one of which -Luka’s sister Mia tells him to use sunscreen, but he doesn’t listen and gets sunburned. With beautifully illustrated images that pop off the page, we can feel Luka’s pain from the sunburn and learn why sun protection becomes so important.
In a fun way that children can relate to, Dr. Lazic teaches us how to treat a sunburn & how to protect ourselves. I was fascinated to learn about how much sunscreen is used for the face and neck (two finger lengths) and for the body (1 teaspoon per body part). I also loved learning about the oatmeal bath recipe for calming the pain. Dr. Lazic ensures that the information is presented in a fun and accessible way, making it easy for children to grasp the importance of sunscreen and protective measures.
I highly recommend this book for parents, caregivers and children of all ages. Congratulations Dr. Lazic & Lea Embeli for a beautifully written and illustrated book. I can’t wait to read the next one!
This graphic novel was such a joy to read. To begin with sun care has always been a passion of mine (much to my family’s chagrin at times), so I applaud the subject matter.
I enjoyed that the science and educational parts became a natural part of the story.
The story itself was cute and the illustrations were beautiful. I can’t wait to share with my kids and see more from this you in the future!
I have a 7-year old and a 3-year old. We live in Colorado, where the sun can be brutal (sunny most of the time + high altitude). I have put sunscreen on them for as long as they can remember, and I have been growing tired of their constant resistance to applying the “yucky stuff” every single day (the 3-year old learned all too fast that she could protest). You’d think by now it’s second nature. It’s not. I came across this book on Instagram through another derm I follow, and was so excited. Bought it, and casually left it on our coffee table. Well, well, well — the 7-year old bookworm picked it up and devoured it in one sitting. Best thing? He gave me all the facts afterwards (how much sunscreen we should apply, all the reasons why, etc.), AND asked for the next book in the series. Better still? Both kids were super cooperative the next morning and were happy to let me put sunscreen on them, no problem. Will it last? Time will tell, but I have renewed hope that they get it and that it will become second nature. Well done, Dr. Lazic and family!
