NEW YORK, New York, October 1, 2024 – Educating children about skin care is entertaining and fun with the second installment in the praised Skinventurez graphic novel series, written by well-known New York City dermatologist and Yale-trained physician, Dr. Tamara Lazic Strugar. In Skinventurez: Wart-o-ween, Mia and her friends are back and some pesky scratching threatens to hinder their Halloween.
In Strugar’s playful story, Mia and her friend Anya leave the city with her dad and her brother Luka to have a fun Halloween out in the country, but she quickly becomes concerned they’ll have to go back home when Luka starts itching like crazy. Determined not to let his skin issue ruin their Halloween plans, Anya and Mia devise a scheme to use her Romanian granny’s book of potions to concoct a homemade remedy. When things don’t go quite as planned, her smitten dad brings them to see the lovely Dr. Lazic, or “Dr. Itch,” for help. When Luka learns he has warts, he is embarrassed, but Dr. Lazic explains they are a common virus and nothing to feel self-conscious about and informs him about prevention and treatment.
About her mission for educating children on skincare and its conditions and safety, Strugar says, “After practicing dermatology for over a decade in New York City, I was diagnosed with stage IV cancer and, while on medical leave, I decided to finally write the children’s books about skin I had always dreamed of writing. I created a graphic novel series, Skinventurez, that promotes skin health via storytelling.”
This entertaining and informative story shows children the importance of understanding their own skin and how to take care of it. Strugar’s book includes precautions to help prevent warts, at-home remedies to try before seeing a professional, along with fun activities that review and ingrain what was learned from the story. Strugar’s first installment in the series, The Sunscreaming Summer, about sun safety, was hailed by Kirkus as “informative and accessible to young readers.”
Dr. Tamara Lazic Strugar is an Ivy League-trained leading dermatologist in New York City.
